Summer Edition I

I'm just lying in bed and thought I'd write a little post before I go to sleep. It's such a warm night, I can smell the sea air drifting through my windows and there's a beautiful full moon in the sky, so I'm content. It wasn't so long ago that I was moaning about the lack of decent summer weather we were having here in the UK but lo and behold we've had a two week heatwave! I've even got a tan...a proper 'looks like I've been abroad' golden glow! Apparently thunderstorms are on their way but I'm hoping the sun will be back before long.

I've been watching the hilarious coverage on Sky News tonight about the birth of the royal baby. The presenters were running around like headless chickens speaking to people waiting outside the hospital, only to receive some very amusing responses. I was sure that Prince William and Kate were going to have a girl but it turns out I was wrong and they've had a little boy who they've yet to name. The atmosphere in London looked amazing and sometimes I think it'd be good to experience it but I'm such a home bird and I do love the peacefulness of the countryside, I'm definitely not a city girl at heart.

I've been making the most of the beautiful weather; taking Millie for walks around the country lanes, heading down to the beach straight after work and trying to create an English country garden by planting climbing roses and an abundance of flowers.

Thank you Mum for the beautiful peonies, you're always so thoughtful.

I decided I'd have a go at making scones for the first time and they didn't turn out too bad considering my lack of experience! I couldn't decide whether to use Mary Berry or Paul Hollywood's recipe and ended up having a funny debate in work with my colleagues and one of the arguments was not being able to trust Paul because of his recent infidelity - I'm not sure whether this effects the taste of his scones though?! Despite his personal dramas, I opted to follow Paul Hollywood's recipe which you can find here. He swears by the use strong flour which is a little odd considering it's normally used to make bread but I trusted him and went with it. Despite following the instructions carefully and handling the dough as little as possible, I thought they turned out a little on the heavy side and I'm going to blame the flour. However, they were still tasty and delicious with raspberry jam, clotted cream and a huge mug of tea. Next time, I'm going to try Mary Berry's recipe and use self-raising flour. I'll let you know how they turn out.

  5. Those scones look yummy, and bring back memories from my food tech lessons at school where we cooked nothing but scones for 6 weeks haha!
I'm glad someone else noticed how OTT the media coverage of the royal baby has been...it must be so overwhelming for Will & Kate to have just become parents and then 24 hours later have to do a press conference outside the hospital. Crazy. I reckon they'll be great parents though :)
